New Jersey Represent! Ben Affleck Is The New Batman

Talk about a shocker! Nobody saw this coming!

After keeping us in suspense for the last few months, Warner Bros. announced yesterday that Ben Affleck will become the next man to wear the cape and cowl of Batman. The studio issued a press release announcing the 41 year old actor will face Henry Cavill's Superman in 2015's 'Batman Vs. Superman'. (Note: WB hasn't given the sequel to 2013's 'Man of Steel' an official title, but everyone's calling it 'Batman Vs. Superman'.)

First, here's what director Zack Snyder had to say in the official statement -

###

“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman.  He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne.  I can’t wait to work with him.”

As soon as the "Ben as Batman" news hit the internetz, a lot of fans (Surprise!) took to social media to voice their reaction. Most of the comments I read were incredibly harsh and negative towards the casting of Affleck. Frankly, I don't quite understand what people are so pissed off about. I know Affleck has been in a few clunkers, but he's also a great actor, and a two-time Oscar winner. Yeah, 'Daredevil' could've been way better, but Affleck wasn't the problem with that movie. Oh, and by the way, have you guys seen 'The Town', or maybe a little movie called 'Argo'?

Was I surprised by the casting news? Yes, I was stunned. Given Affleck's past comments about never wanting to be in a superhero movie, he was the last actor I would've guessed. I truly thought Josh Brolin would get the role, but the more I think about Affleck in the part, the more I'm cool with it.

I can't do a better job of explaining why Big Ben will make a great Batman than Mark Hughes at Forbes (Yeah, Forbes.com has a superhero blog - funny, I know.) Mark runs down a list of reasons that might change your mind if you're in the anti-Ben camp.

That's it for now, but, before you go, check out a few reactions from the Twitterverse about yesterday's big news - and of course let me know what you think.
