Updates On ‘Justice League Dark’ Movie And 'Hulk' TV Series

Justice League Dark (issue 9, July 2012) - DC Comics
So, whatever happened to that long-rumored Warner Bros. movie - 'Justice League Dark- aka 'Dark Universe'. You know, the flick that was allegedly going to reboot Swamp Thing and bring together DC Comics' greatest supernatural characters. Apparently, it's still in the works, but isn't anywhere close to a production start date.

In January 2013, I posted about what we knew up to that point. At that time, Guillermo del Toro (the mastermind of the project) confirmed that the cast of characters would include Constantine, The Spectre, Deadman, Etrigan the Demon, and Swamp Thing. While there's no major developments in the last 6 months to report, I'm happy to say it sounds like the movie is still moving ahead.

Recently, del Toro talked to MTV while promoting his current movie, Pacific Rim, and he was asked about the JL Dark movie. You can watch del Toro discuss his many projects in the video at the bottom of this post. But - if you prefer the short version, I've got ya covered -

  • Del Toro's still waiting on an unnamed screenwriter to become availabe to help on the script.
  • In the meantime, he's polishing the outline of the screenplay.
  • Del Toro has 2 projects in the pipeline before JL Dark begins filming - 'The Strain' and 'Crimson Peak'
  • He's in favor of connecting the JL Dark movie with the larger DC universe, telling MTV -
"The great thing about the 'Dark Universe' is that you have this possibility of creating a supernatural group and you can play by different rules but I would love to see the DC Universe become as cohesive as the Marvel [Cinematic] Universe. So if there's any correlation, I will honor it."

  • Finally, del Toro mentioned that the 'Hulk' TV series that was talked about last year is apparently dead, or (at best) stalled. It appears the 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series is the main focus of Disney/Marvel at this point.

In a separate interview with Screen Rant, del Toro talked about why he's so excited about JL Dark. It sounds like the director's been a long-time fan of DC's supernatural characters, telling Screen Rant -

“Monsters! More monsters. When I was following the DC comics in my youth, my favorites were Swamp Thing, [Etrigan the] Demon, Deadman … My earliest love was Constantine, and I love Zatanna, Destiny, the whole mythology. So we’re working on a really rich mythological environment.”
