Three Jokers: by Anthony Ingruber

A friend recently gave me a heads up about this young actor named Anthony Ingruber and his spot on impersonations of movie stars. Anthony's YouTube channel has a bunch of great examples of his work, but my favorite is the one posted here. It's called Three Jokers and it features Anthony's impression of three classic film versions of Batman's arch rival (Apologies to the late Cesar Romero. Maybe Anthony could tackle that one next).

Jack Nicholson

First up is Jack Nicholson from Batman (1989), then we have Mark Hamill from Batman: The Animated Series (1992 -1995) and finally, Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight (2008). One of the things I found interesting about this clip is how it highlights the three actors' unique take on this classic villain. Each version is distinct, but all three capture The Joker's psychotic nature and maniacal laugh.

Below is a bit more info on Anthony. Also check out his YouTube channel.
Anthony Ingruber is an actor and voice over artist who originally shot to YouTube stardom with his eerily uncanny ability to mimic dozens of top Hollywood personalities. Anthony's versatility as an actor has already given him the opportunity to work with prestigious franchises such as WETA Workshop and Disney, as well as in short films, internet videos, industrial films and even video games.

Avengers Assemble in San Diego!

Left to right: Robert Downey Jr., Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johannson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans,
Samuel L.Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Director- Joss Whedon, Marvel Studios Pres.- Kevin Feige

Yes, it is indeed a good time to be a superhero fan. If tonight's climax of San Diego Comic-Con 2010 doesn't prove it, nothing will. Tonight the world got its first look at the complete lineup for Marvel Studios' long-awaited superhero team movie, Avengers (May 4, 2012). Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark / Iron Man) introduced his fellow Avengers, and without overstating it, the casting really looks brilliant.

Stark's teammates will be:
Chris Evans (Steve Rogers / Captain America)
Chris Hemsworth (Thor)
Scarlett Johannson (Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow)
Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury)
Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner / Hulk)
Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton / Hawkeye)
and while not officially an Avenger, Clark Gregg will reprise his key role as Agent Coulson.

As reported on the Heat Vision blog and elsewhere, Downey also gave a hint as to the scale of this cape epic, when he told the cheering audience that it would be even bigger than Christopher Nolan's mind-blowing Inception (2010):

“That was the most ambitious movie I’ve ever seen,” he said. “Then I thought: Wait a Goddamned minute. Marvel is going to take all of their top superheroes and put them together in one movie. THAT is the most ambitious movie ever.”

Well, now that we know the major players in Marvel's ultimate superhero flick, we're in for two years of buzz build up. Now, I'm wondering how DC / Warner Brothers will counter this publicity tsunami and bring the spotlight back on their major characters. Do you think we're in store for a similar announcemet next year at Comic-Con from DC Entertainment regarding the equally anticipated Justice League movie?

Alan Moore on New Watchmen Projects: No Thanks

Alan Moore
Watchmen, copyright DC Comics

Alan Moore, creator of the graphic novel classics, Watchmen, V for Vendetta and many other titles, spoke to Wired.com about an offer he received from DC Comics regarding Watchmen. Moore claims that DC offered him full rights to the characters that he and artist, Dave Gibbons, created in 1986, if he agreed to work on prequels and sequels involving the Watchmen universe.
According to Wired.com's article, Moore refused the offer, saying:

"So I just told them that if they said that 10 years ago, when I asked them for that, then yeah it might have worked, But these days I don't want Watchmen back. Certainly, I don't want it back under those kinds of terms."

The gist of the article is Moore will not be involved with any future Watchmen-related projects. However, it's a good bet that DC is planning to mine Watchmen for other comics series and feature films. I believe one day there will be other films with the Watchmen smiley face logo attached to them, but it's a shame that Moore won't have any input on them. I look forward to reading opinions about Moore's refusal of DC's offer, and the possibility of new Watchmen books and films. Comments?

X-Men: First Class Is Finding Its Mutants

James McAvoy
Michael Fassbender
The cast of X-Men: First Class (June 3, 2011) is being assembled, and I have to say, some of the names already lined up to play the super-powered mutants give me a good feeling about this movie. This might just turn out to be a great addition to the X-Men film universe. While most of the actors are not well-known to the average viewer, overall, the fan reaction to the casting news has been positive. Director, Matthew Vaughn, still has a few key roles to fill, such as Scott Summers aka Cyclops and Jean Grey, but as you can see from the list below, the mutant teams are rounding out nicely.  As of July 8, the following actors are preparing for the first day of filming, which is set to begin in London in September:

James McAvoy (Atonement, Wanted) - Charles Xavier, leader of the X-Men

Michael Fassbender (300, Inglourious Basterds) - Eric Lehnsherr, aka Magneto, leader of the evil Brotherhood

Alice Eve (She's Out of My League) - Emma Frost, aka The White Queen

Rosamund Pike (An Education, Surrogates) - Moira Mactaggert, Xavier's girlfriend

Amber Heard (not confirmed) - Raven Darkholme, aka Mystique
A little background from Fox Studios on the mutant feud that's at the heart of First Class:

“Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men."
